TomTom ONE 130S 3.5-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator (Factory Refurbished)Excellent shape. Had one month with no problems. Upgraded from a TomTom XL. Text to speech is far superior.
Description neglects to notify you that you will receive the improved locking window mount (actually works), USB adapter, car charger but not the home charger.

This is my 3rd GPS. Had a Garmin 350, had a HP iPAQ 310. Gave the 350 to my dad, sold my HP (was sad to sell it but HP dropped the ball on this fine device). I just wanted something low cost, with text to speech, and this fits. My original thoughts was to get a Magellan 32xx series. But they didn't drop in price and didn't have some features I wanted. When this TomTom came up, I looked at the features and thought I'd give it a shot. I didn't care about having the latest maps, I will buy another low priced GPS in a yr or 2 and get newer maps that way. If you look on their wesite, the 30 day map guarantee doesn't apply to refurbs.

The box stated "Road Tested", but when I opened the box, it looked brand new, no scratches or dings, everything was there, even the protective sheet on the screen. I charged it up by plugging it into the USB on my PC, a green LED on the bottom came on, but it never went off. After 2 hrs I turned it on, it got satellite fix in my house in a few seconds. I was impressed. I walked around inside my avg 1 story home, never lost satellite fix.

Some stated they got new maps, not me. Mine told me that the free map upgrade period had expired. The latest maps are version 830.2323, mine are 715.xxxx. The TomTom Home software did load and download the map updates, but not the latest map version. It did ask me if I wanted to buy the newer maps. It also upgraded the internal firmware to the lastest version 8.010. The Home software also allows you to load up other voices, POIs, map colors, car icons, startup/shutdown display images, the works. It comes with one female voice that speaks the street names and you can load the male voice that speaks the street names with the Home software. You can even purchase other voices, like celebrities. This little device is very customizable.

It has a total of 23 Preferences categories you can set. You can set it for large or small style keyboard, QWERTY, ABCD, or AZERTY format, which is nice. It dims automatically at night (at some set time, not by ambient light levels). You can turn on or off which POIs it displays on the map. You can select what it displays on the status bar on the bottom, you can even change it to display the status bar on the right side of the screen. You can have the screen shut off in between instructions. You can set it up for 2D display with North "up" or direction of travel "up". You can set it up to warn you that you are speeding (if it has the road speed info). I like the feature where it can power off, if your car power plug goes off, when you turn off your car.

I like the map browsing feature, as it displays the street numbers along with the street names. I also like the ability to input lat/long coordinates as this comes in handy sometimes (at least for me). The screen does wash out in direct bright sunlight. The volume is plenty loud, mine is set at 70%, I have some hearing loss (too much loud music in my stupid younger days). And does get distorted when set at 100%.

So far I've been pleased with it. It's been accurate around my home town so far. I'll be going on a road trip later this month, and will report back on how it does. You do need to select the voice that speaks the street names. It also displays which side of the street your destination is on, just look at the flag, maybe TomTom is working on this feature, sure would be nice to hear which side of the street your destination is on (like on the Garmins). You can have it recalculate an alternative route if you don't like the original one it gives you. You can set it to bypass certain roads if you know those roads have delays.

One nifty thing it lets you do is to make map corrections as you find them. When you plug it into your PC, it'll upload your corrections and download others from other users. I liked playing with it so much that I found nefarious sites where one can get the latest maps. I downloaded and installed the maps, did the little "mumbo jumbo" and it works. I now have the latest (version 830.2323) and it works with the Home software. So for under $70 and some work, or even without work, you get a very capable GPS.

UPDATE: Sep. 12, 2009
No problems with my TomTom, found all the destinations I'm travelling to, even back roads out in the country. I've added many other POIs with the Home software. Another thing I like is the way it'll kinda guide you, with a dotted line, when you're like in a large parking lot, to the street you'll be taking next.

5 out of 5 stars great value for the price   August 23, 2009

I was skeptical of many reviews that said refurb unit does not come with free map upgrade. i went ahead and purchased Tomtom 130S from amazon last week. the unit arrived in less than 5 business days. Though it was sold as refurb unit, It came in a box that only said "road tested" and appeared new with no signs of usage. It looks like a new one.

Anyways, once i got it, i opened the box and connected the gps to my computer using the usb cable(provided). the manual said the tomtom software will automatically be installed on my computer, however nothing happened. so i just went to tomtom website and downloaded the tomtom home software and installed it. then the software asked me if i wanted to download newer maps for free. I said ok, and it downloaded the latest maps in about 1 hour 30 minutes (on a DSL line) and then install took 40 more minutes. After the maps were update, it asked me if i wanted to install mapshare (to get updates for maps from user community). i said yes, and it downloaded a bunch of other thing onto my gps unit. this took 10 more minutes. thats it, I was then able to start the gps.

It started in some european language, and with some guesswork i could easily set english(US) as default language. This GPS has a number of user customizable options including day and night map color setting, various voice prompts and lot of many other options that I did not find in other gps.
once i started the GPS , it was able to instantly find signal in my home, and maps looks great compared to my 5 year old ultra expensive delphi gps unit that this was replacing.

Demo feature that shows the actual route you will be travelling before you actually travel is cool. home screen is accesible easily from anywhere with just one tap on the screen. the unit is really small and handy, and you can easily mount the thing on the windsheild with the windsheild mount(provided) or the console mount(provided).

I did not find any cons so far and I will be using the gps next week so i will have more updates soon.
UPDATE: I have been using this GPS for past few weeks, and this works like a charm. Only once did I notice it gave me incorrect direction and asked me to take a freeway that takes me to a different city than i was travelling to. I guess it probably got confused at intersection. other than that it works fine 99.99% of time. Its very quick to grab gps signal after a cold start. On an average it took less than 30 seconds to get gps signal and never lost it even in cloudy/rainy weather. the battery charge lasts about 2 hours and I have even used the gps when walking in and aaround DC downtown area. it was helpful and gave me accurate directions.
best [...] i ever spent on a GPS. period.

The tom tom 130 S navigator is so simple to operate. The audio is real clear and when travling down the road with the windows open you can still hear it very clear. The graphics is fantastic, I think the tom tom 130 S is excellent quality and would highly recomend it.

Dear READER--- At first, I purchased the TOMTOM ONE 130 for [...]Tried it out JUST ONCE, but returned it... It did NOT have the text-to-speech function... It would say, for example, "turn right in 300 yards", but then I would have to actually take my eye off of my driving and look at the GPS unit, itself, to see the name of the street it was telling me to turn on to... Then, I ordered the TOM TOM ONE 130 "S" model (for ONLY $17 more), WITH text-to-speech, and came to realize that, not only is this model way more convenient to use, but it is also way more SAFE to use... If you are planning on buying a GPS, G E T T E X T - T O - S P E E C H ! ! !... I can't say it enough... If you order one of the plain models, and then have the opportunity to use TTS, you will regret NOT having spent the extra few dollars to get TTS... Anyway, my GPS is a refurbished unit (can't tell at all--it looks perfectly brand new to me). Saved a bit by buying it that way. It seems to be well made and very sturdy... The first thing I did, though, was to cover the screen with cling film (available from any art supply store) to protect it from scratches. Then, I went on-line to find a "silicone skin" (it's like a rubberized, form fitting case) for the unit. Now, it is protected... The mounting system gets 5 stars... You simply hold the round knob against the windshield and rotate it 1/4 turn... DONE!... The on-button has to be held down for 2 seconds before the unit powers up. Another reviewer said that their on-button was not working properly, but maybe they did not know about this 2 second thing... Anyway, I think they made it this way so that the unit would not accidently turn on if it was, say, in you pocket and the on-button was briefly pressed... The on-screen icons and menus are SUPER EASY to follow. In fact, this unit is so easy to use, that it only comes with a bare-bones owners manual... If you want to go deeper into the intricacies of the unit, you have to go on-line... I (having an art and architecture background) LOVE the colorful and simple maps. Nice, bright primary colors, with bold graphics, and not a lot of map clutter... It is just the perfect GPS for me... And, if this unit is not big enough for you, may I suggest getting a new pair of glasses?... This is small enough to fit in the pocket of your jeans, yet is plenty big enough to read easily. Some people disliked the fact that there is only one voice (Samantha's) that can be used for the TTS mode... Well, I LIKE Samantha's voice, thankyou, very much... Some of her pronunciations can be off, at times ("ta-hundred", for one hundred), and she likes to say "semi-colon" a lot ("highway 32--semi-colon, Maple avenue"), but, I think it just adds to the charm of this unit... This was probably one of the least inexpensive GPS units that I have seen that gets good ratings. It pulls in the satellite signals strongly and quickly, and has all of the most used/needed functions covered successfully... If you need to impress yourself with how many functions your GPS unit has, then spend more... If you want to impress yourself with how wisely you spent your money, then buy this TOMTOM ONE 130 "S"... I, for one am VERY SATISFIED with my purchase... Thank you for your time... Don
